Summary
Scrimshaw whale's tooth engraved by seaman with the head and shoulders of a woman surrounded by an eagle and two American flags. 'Two scrimshaw walrus tusks' (M. Jessup). In notebook no.2, page 18 (1340945.2) Charles Wade refers to: 'Admiral 49. ‘Scrimshaw’. Walrus Tusk, engraved by seaman shows a Woman’s head between two American flags, (12 stars only.) & the Eagle.' Includes sketch with dimensions.
