Summary
Coachbuilder's model of a barouche with two perches. Red painted wooden body slung by leather straps onto C springs. Upholstered in green velvet. Perch upholstered in brown leather, including footrest. Footman's perch at rear covered in same brown leather. Yellow painted metal chassis with black lining. Wooden wheels with metal tyres. In notebook no.5, page 109 (1340945.5) Charles Wade refers to: 'Large Garret no. 99 Coach Builder's Mode of a barouche with two Perches. The Body is painted Red, is slung to 'C' springs. The undercarriage is painted yellow c.1820. At a later date, a scheme for a friction Brake has been added. This was applied to each wheel, activated by means of a cord, the pulleys and guides for this still remain.' Charles Wade mentions this model in his notebook 1340960. 'Finding the two very interesting large scale model carriages, a Barouche c. 1820 and a private travelling coach c. 1830, was entirely due to happy chance. Having bought an embroidered banner for a trumpet with the arms of George III for a trumpet, the owner said he had a regimental banner used at Waterloo. This he said he would send round from his other shop for me to see but did not do so, eventually I went round to the other shop. The banner was packed up with a complicated network of strings, before undoing I asked the price. 95 guineas so I said don't bother to unwrap it. At the same moment I caught sight of the model coach almost hidden by a large picture and turning round, on a piece of furniture stood the Barouche' (pg. 109).
