Summary
Model of a 'Suffolk' farm wagon. Box body. Painted blue with red interior, chassis, wheels and shafts. Two partitioned sections inside. Barge rails projected outwards by four dowels each. Red shafts with iron slider bars, attached to front bar of axle assembly. Single width wheels with iron tyres. In notebook no.5, page 83 (1340945.5) Charles Wade refers to: 'The Large Garret Land Transport MODELS Country Wagons, built by H.R. Waiting of Boxwood, painted by C.P.W. scale 1½" - 1ft all constructed as the actual wagon, with Real tenons & every bolt & detail is carefully shown. Full details & specification of each is in the Snowshill Chest in the Gallery Room. no.2 Suffolk Waggon Blue'. In his notebook recalling his memories of Yoxford (SNO.MISC.955) CPW describes 'The Suffolk Wain' and includes very detailed pencil sketches, including some labeled cross-sections. He has added a small note at the end of his description regarding the Waiting model. 'NOTE. In the Great Garret SNOWSHILL MANOR. There is a beautifully built model, scale 1 1/2 to one foot, made by H R Waiting from measurements of an old one, this shows every detail accurately to the smallest nut & bolt'. (Pages 14-17)'The skill of the Country Wheelwright is well shown in the set of model wains, made for me so perfectly by Mr. H. R. WAITING. This collection of models will be a valuable record in days to come, as the Wheelwrights craft is now a dead art. Each of these models was built from careful measurements taken from an actual old wain, every bolt and detail is accurately shown to 1 ½” scale'. (Charles Wade, Haphazard Notes Volume 2, page 96-97)
