Summary

Model of a Warwickshire box wagon. The body is painted blue on the sides and top rave. Interior sides. painted red. The internal base remains unpainted except for four red summers. The tailboard is arched and a single hayrack, painted blue, hooks into the front of the wagon on the top rave. The undercarriage, shafts and four wheels are painted red. The shafts are held in place with a removable iron rod and feature iron slider bars and ridge chain. The front wheels have a diameter of 15cm, and the back wheel have a diameter of 18cm. The outside track of all of the wheels are covered with a double width of metal strakes, each section having been nailed into place. On either side of the wagon is a brake chain, one for each of the back wheels. In notebook no.5, page 83 (1340945.5) Charles Wade refers to: 'The Large Garret Land Transport MODELS Country Wagons, built by H.R. Waiting of Boxwood, painted by C.P.W. scale 1½" = 1ft all constructed as the actual wagon, with Real tenons & every bolt & detail is carefully shown. Full details & specification of each is in the Snowshill Chest in the Gallery Room. no.22 Warwickshire Blue'. In Gloucester Records Office, (1342628 Ref. D10423/Box 6/11) Purchased on the 29th of December 1937. Bill from H. R. Waiting 26 Church Road, Richmond. 'The skill of the Country Wheelwright is well shown in the set of model wains, made for me so perfectly by Mr. H. R. WAITING. This collection of models will be a valuable record in days to come, as the Wheelwrights craft is now a dead art. Each of these models was built from careful measurements taken from an actual old wain, every bolt and detail is accurately shown to 1 ½” scale'. (Charles Wade, Haphazard Notes Volume 2, page 96-97)
