Summary
Model of an Essex field wagon with tilt. Box body, exterior painted blue. Interior, wheels and chassis painted red. Red wooden canopy support. Tilt is made of stitched hessian, stretched over a wooden lattice which is part of the wagon. Red shafts with slider bars, attached to front axle assembly. Brake chains. In notebook no.5, page 83 (1340945.5) Charles Wade refers to: 'The Large Garret Land Transport MODELS Country Wagons, built by H.R. Waiting of Boxwood, painted by C.P.W. scale 1½" = 1ft all constructed as the actual wagon, with Real tenons & every bolt & detail is carefully shown. Full details & specification of each is in the Snowshill Chest in the Gallery Room. no.16 Essex a field wagon with Tilt for use when taking produce up to the London market. Blue' 'The skill of the Country Wheelwright is well shown in the set of model wains, made for me so perfectly by Mr. H. R. WAITING. This collection of models will be a valuable record in days to come, as the Wheelwrights craft is now a dead art.
