Summary
Ordinary, or penny-farthing bicycle of 1890 with oil lamp fitted within the wheel. Leather saddle. Metal handlebars with vertical ends. Sprung leather saddle by Brooks. Flat pedals of modern design i.e. central spindle and two parallel footrests. Serrated top mounting step. Metal wheels with solid rubber tyres.
Full description
In notebook no.5, page 100 (SNO.MISC.959.5), following Large Garret item 64A, someone (not Charles Wade) has written (in ink): "'Ordinary' Racing Bicycle of about 1880. 52in front wheel. Reconditioned 1957 by ?? Bert Godwin of Evesham, tyres given by Dunlop Rubber Co., saddle remade by Brooks of Birmingham & 'King of the Road' lamp reconditioned by Joseph Lucas Ltd. Given 1953 by ????? M Froggat (Handcuff maker, Birmingham who died in retirement at Broadway (per Hew Saunders from Evesham)"
