Summary
Bicycle - Velocipede. Michaux iron frame painted black, lined yellow. Varnished wooden wheels, with iron tyres. Rope-operated brake on rear wheel. Triangular section iron pedals. Leather covered metal saddle can be moved along crossbar to accommodate different sized riders. In notebook no.5, page 98 (1340945.5) Charles Wade refers to: 'Large Garret no.65 MICHAUX BICYCLE (Boneshaker) the ideas of driving the front wheels by cranks on its axle is attributed to PIERRE LALLEMENT who was employed by MICHAUX, introduced into England in 1868'. Includes sketch with date 1865.
