Summary
Pedal vehicle - Four wheeled pedal propelled vehicle called Aellopodes, said to have been used by a Suffolk postman. Box for mail doubles as a seat and the iron steering tiller is also the pulling handle. Wheels, treadles, and steering arm painted dull red; frame painted blue. Wooden wheels with iron tyres. Frame of wood with box under the seat. The rear axle turns in bearings attached to the frame, the fore carriage is connected by a swivel plate and central bolt. The rear axle is bent into two opposite cranks which are driven by long treadles. The vehicle is steered by a single lever connected to the fore-carriage. In notebook no.5, page 95 (1340945.5) Charles Wade refers to: 'Large Garret no.59 AELLOPODES Pedomotive Carriage and Velocipede One was constructed about 1819 by the Rev. Edmund Cartwright. 4 examples are shown, one of which is for a boy. (I) frame of wood and wooden seat with a Box beneath. The rear axle turns on bearings attached to the frame, the fore carriage is connected to a swivel plate & central bolt. The rear axle is bent with two opposite cranks which are driven by long treadles attached to them & suspended from the front extension of the frame. The vehicle is steered by a single hand lever connected to the fore carriage. The machine is painted the same red & blue as the old Suffolk Wagons 7 was used by the postman of Framlingham Suffolk. This is the earliest of the four examples. ' Includes sketch. In notebook Snowshill Manor, page 112 (1340960) Charles Wade refers to: 'For three years I tried to buy my first four wheeled velocipede. (Garret 59) at Framlingham, Suffolk. The son of its owner eventually sold it to me, saying 'I shall catch it from Dad' who happened to be laid up.'. In Wade's "Haphard Notes Volume 2" (SNO.MISC.1340941.2) page 41: 'With those who will not sell, I have often found that patience often succeeds. For three years I waited for the velocipede at Framlingam Suffolk (Garret 59)'.
