Summary
Seventeenth century crewel work valance or pelmet and two bed hangings consisting of carnations and Tudor roses woth stylised bird to the centre amongst blue and green leaves and boughs and border. Matches section of bed hanging SNO.T.38 stored as part of the Costume Collection. In notebook no.5, page 71 (1340945.5) Charles Wade refers to 'Mermaid 60. Bed with 17th Cent. Hangings embroidered in Blues & Reds. Some of the original Damask background remains. Floral design with birds and animals introduced. 7 ft. 6 in. from floor to top of Canopy, with a top valance 1’ 3” deep. Lower valance & coverlet of another set. Was originally at Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich. bought from Miss Fonnereau'.
