Summary
Tapestry, wool and silk, A Queen, probably Oudenaarde, c. 1560-1580. In the centre a woman wearing a green dress and a yellow robe sits beneath a green canopy with two female attendants standing behind her. She raises one arm to greet two men who approach form the right. In the background there is a palace on the left and a landscape on the right. Beneath the figures’ feet there is a separate small scene of a woman with a group of soldiers. There are borders at either side with strapwork patterns among leaves and a twisted ribbon at the outside, and at the top and bottom more leaves and flowers. The borders at the top, bottom and right hand side have been sewn onto the main field but may be original to the tapestry. In notebook no.1, page 63 (1340945.1) Charles Wade refers to: 'Meridian 6. Flemish Tapistry (sic) 9’0” x 7’6” A group of four figures with a castle in the background. a panel of 10 smaller figures below, border all round. 17th.cent.'
