Summary
Mahogany horse measuring stick with brass scale marked in feet starting at '5 FEET' on ones side, and hands on the other. Brass plaque attached engraved 'W Newton. GRANTHAM'. Metal rod from wooden part to ground. Hinged arm to place on horse, slides up and down to desired height and set with a brass thumb screw. Pendulum on thin rope, hangs in a pear shaped hole for level.

Mahogany horse measuring stick with brass scale, brass plaque attached engraved 'W NEWTON. GRANTHAM'. 'Mahogany and brass measuring stick, made by W.Newton of Grantham. Almost certainly made by William Newton, gunsmith of Grantham (1722-1790). Other horse measures made by gunsmiths are known - one by John Daykin of Nottingham c1760-c1775, now at Calke Abbey, Derbyshire (288722), and another by Robert Wogdon, Cockspur Street, Charing Cross, dated 1765 (sold at auction: Clevedon Salerooms 9 Sept. 2010, Lot 607).
