Summary
Medicine chest, circa 1830, with contents. Large and of universal type. Mahogany with two hinged doors. There is a brass recessed military style carrying handle on top and similar small handles to all the drawers. Doors open to reveal a central panel covered in ruched green velvet with two new shiny brass knobs. These enable panel to pull forwards and downwards and rest on the knobs, which are the same depth as the box's base. A box like structure is on the back of the panel, with two powder drawers, with covers, on the left. Single drawer on the right with compartments for four small bottles, two ointment pots, measuring cylinder, and mortar and pestle. (Some now missing). Behind, in central part of the chest are green lined velvet compartments for ten bottles. Above is large drawer with four small boxes and pill tile. Each door contains green velvet lined compartments for six bottles on each side.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust with Snowshill Manor in 1951 by Charles Paget Wade.
