Summary
Alcohol Hydrometer in a mahogany box with boxwood inlaid panel inscribed 'CLARKES IMPORT HYDROMETER MADE ONLY BY DRING AND FAGE HYDROMETER MAKERS TO HIS MAJESTY'S HONOURABLE BOARD OF EXCISE. No. 248 TOOLEY St. NEAR LONDON BRIDGE'. Box lined with silk over wool padding and green baize. Containing float hydrometer sphere, tail (broken) engraved with numbers. Shaft engraved: ‘CLARKE' and ‘Import’, top engraved ‘WINE SPT 7234' and 39 brass disc weights on locating pegs, each engraved with a number and some with a relative temperature (hot, cold, temperate, etc,). In notebook no.2, page ? (1340945.2) Charles Wade refers to: 'Admiral 259. Clarks Hydrometer made by Dring and Fage Hydrometer makers to Her Majesty's Honourable Board of Excise, Tooley St. Nr. London Bridge. Well designed lettering and figures engraved on the weights.' Includes sketch with dimensions.
