Summary
Wooden mask of a man, from Bali with Udeng (head cloth) with three hibiscus flowers. Diamond shaped earrings. Holes for eyes and nostrils. All stained a dark brown.The carving technique consists of chipping with sharp tools and light taps of a mallet, the work is made smooth with pumice and given a high polish by rubbing with bamboo. Two hanging loops of leather in the headdress. In notebook no.4, page 47 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seraphim 166. Two masks of men with UDENG = head cloth & Hibiscus flowers.'
