Summary
Document holder - Persian lacquer court document cover consisting of two lacquered boards, one side showing a seated male courtier surrounded by deities with faced sunbursts above. Flanked by two winged angels and two fish with seated deity below mounted on two tigers. Border with frieze of animals, monkeys, squirrels, deer, rabbits and other side showing seated female courtier and mythical animals blowing trumpets and two below with water carriers. Same border as previous. Overall colours of green and orange and gold. Gold leather spine (damaged). Painted white inside. Containing four pieces of marbleised cards each showing portraits of court officials (1337968-71/SNO.R.22-25). In notebook no.4, page 33 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seraphim 40. Persian M.S. Covers painted with two enthroned figures surrounded by grotesque figures & animals of many colours. 12" x 9".'
