Summary
Javanese male shadow puppet 'Wayang Kulit' used by the storyteller 'Dalang'. Made of jointed buffalo hide with gold painted body and elaborate painted costume and curling headdress. Supported on a central rod with two smaller sticks attached with ties of twine to the hands. Arms jointed at elbows and shoulders with wooden pegs. In notebook no.4, page 47 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seraphim 163. Shadow Pupets(sic) WAYANG KULIT Made of Bufalo parchment, cut out with dies & painted, used by the DALANG = story teller in the WAYANG.'
