Summary
Headdress of a dancing girl from Bali. Cut out of buffalo hide and painted gold over red, the flowers are frangipani. attached to the cane structure with twisted wire. Frame of cane with a headband covered in linen. Framed pieces of glass to the front and sides of the head with sides and back of elaborate pierced style. Small gold devil mask at the base of the back. Gold beaded tassels suspended from pieces of cane either side at the front. In notebook no.4, page 45 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seraphim 137. DRAMA Headress of TJONDONG = Dancing girl used in the “LEGONG” in which conventional dance formulae represent actions & emotions explained by the DALANG = story teller. Stories based on episodes from the MALAT, the Balinese 'Thousand and One nights'. The Headress is all gold & cut out of Bufalo parchment, the flowers are frangipani.'.' Includes sketch with parts labelled.
