Summary
Mask from Bali of carved wood and blotched red paint and yellow wash on top. Simulated hair eyebrows in continuous line with wave decoration above nose. Open mouth and gold teeth. Head circlet showing spike design carving with lotus petal to the centre. Red, blue, black, yellow, and gold painted overall. Paint flaking to left side of forehead. Hide thong mouthpiece nailed inside. Nostril holes. Red and white label inside reads: ‘No. HC277 f 2'. In notebook no.4, page 46 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seraphim 140. MASKS 23 specimens WAYANG WONG of carved wood, painted, used by actors dancing & singing the classic KAWI RAMAYANA episodes - also in the TOPENG, Local History Plays, BABAD mostly pantomime with dialogue by the comic actors.' Includes sketch of eyes.
