Summary
Mask from Bali of carved wood painted pale blue with male eyes of black, red, pink, and white. Closed red lips with real horsehair moustache above. Headband of spiked design behind, all painted in orange, yellow, black, red, blue, and gold. Face paint flaking to the sides of the head. Holes for nostrils, with piece of twine through. Red and whit label inside reads: 'No. HC207 f1.50’CPW'. In notebook no.4, page 46 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seraphim 140. MASKS 23 specimens WAYANG WONG of carved wood, painted, used by actors dancing & singing the classic KAWI RAMAYANA episodes - also in the TOPENG, Local History Plays, BABAD mostly pantomime with dialogue by the comic actors.' Includes sketch of eyes.
