Summary
Mask from Bali of carved wood painted purple (badly worn to show black underneath) with bulbous devil eyes, closed red lips with black carved curled beard beneath and black painted moustache above. Gold painted circlet headband with leaf decoration to the centre. Stylised pieces to each end. Leather and linen mouthpiece nailed inside. Crack in forehead repaired with two material stitches and repainted. Nostril hole. Red and white label inside reads: No. HC278 f2-50'. In notebook no.4, page 46 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seraphim 140. MASKS 23 specimens WAYANG WONG of carved wood, painted, used by actors dancing & singing the classic KAWI RAMAYANA episodes - also in the TOPENG, Local History Plays, BABAD mostly pantomime with dialogue by the comic actors.' Includes sketch of eyes.
