Summary
Mask from Bali of carved wood painted flesh pink all over with bulbous devil eyes of gold, white, and black. Simulated hair and euebrows with angle decoration on forehead. Tail ended moustache and gold teeth. Small angle painted on chin. Circlet of blue, red, and gold showing carved mask to the centre. Linen mouthpiece nailed inside. Holes for nostrils. Hole each side. Red and white sticky label reads No.H541 f1.50’. In notebook no.4, page 46 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seraphim 140. MASKS 23 specimens WAYANG WONG of carved wood, painted, used by actors dancing & singing the classic KAWI RAMAYANA episodes - also in the TOPENG, Local History Plays, BABAD mostly pantomime with dialogue by the comic actors.' Includes sketch of eyes.
