Summary
Mask from Bali of carved wood painted white with highly stylised black painted decoration around the bulbous devil eyes, eyebrows, forehead, small nose and open mouth which is showing a full set of sharp carved gold painted teeth. Head crowned with a circlet of wavy band with gold, red, yellow, blue, and black decoration within. Hide thong mouthpiece nailed inside. Nostril holes. Red and white label inside reads: ‘No. U3338 f3 2'. In notebook no.4, page 46 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seraphim 140. MASKS 23 specimens WAYANG WONG of carved wood, painted, used by actors dancing & singing the classic KAWI RAMAYANA episodes - also in the TOPENG, Local History Plays, BABAD mostly pantomime with dialogue by the comic actors.'
