Summary
Mask from Bali of carved wood painted flesh pink. Bulbous devil eyes of black, red, and white. Black stylised moustache with thin tailed ends. Eyebrows formed by two continuous lines. Red painted lips with gold teeth and black angled chin cup elow decorated with gold dots and crosses. Black painted half circlet to each side of the forehead. painted black inside Leather thong nailed inside. Red and white label inside reads: ‘No. H9172 f2.50’.In notebook no.4, page 46 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seraphim 140. MASKS 23 specimens WAYANG WONG of carved wood, painted, used by actors dancing & singing the classic KAWI RAMAYANA episodes - also in the TOPENG, Local History Plays, BABAD mostly pantomime with dialogue by the comic actors.' Includes sketch of eyes.
