Summary
Mask from Bali of carved wood, painted black all over, having curved red lips, pointed nose, bulbous devil eyes. Continuous gold line forming the eyebrows. Face framed with carved curl design, crowned with circlet of gold band with large flower rosette to centre with red, blue and white swag decoration above. Leather thong mouthpiece nailed inside mouth. Broken nose, nostril holes. Handwritten in pencil inside ‘itsm’. Red and white label inside reads: ‘No. UA204 f.2.50’. In notebook no.4, page 46 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seraphim 140. MASKS 23 specimens WAYANG WONG of carved wood, painted, used by actors dancing & singing the classic KAWI RAMAYANA episodes - also in the TOPENG, Local History Plays, BABAD mostly pantomime with dialogue by the comic actors.' Includes sketch of eyes.
