Summary
Mask from Bali in carved wood, painted red with highlights of black and gold decoration to devil eyes, cheeks and mouth. Real horsehair moustache. Highly stylised circlet painted gold showing a crown to centre mounted by a cross. Leather mouth thong nailed inside. Nostril holes with a piece of twine looped through. Hole in the top. Red and white sticky label reads: ‘No.HC284 f3 2.50’. In notebook no.4, page 46 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seraphim 140. MASKS 23 specimens WAYANG WONG of carved wood, painted, used by actors dancing & singing the classic KAWI RAMAYANA episodes - also in the TOPENG, Local History Plays, BABAD mostly pantomime with dialogue by the comic actors.'
