Summary
Meerschaum pipe bowl in original case. Relief carving on pipe bowl depicts scene of a house with a dog, engraved '1806'. Bowl with brass lid. Stem decorated with mother-of-pearl and abalone. Clam shaped leather case with red velvet lining. Note: meerschaum German translation: Meer - 'sea', and Schaum - 'foam', in reference to its frothiness. Hydrated magnesium silicate, found mainly in Turkey, it resembles clay, and was commonly used for pipe bowls.

Given to the National Trust with Snowshill Manor in 1951 by Charles Paget Wade.
