Summary
Walking stick with a roundel in the form of a 'Monkey's fist' knot made from ivory. Twisted, spiral body. The walking stick itself has been suggested to be a Narwhal horn, although it is more likely to be made from elephant ivory and the black twists being elephant hair. In notebook no.2, page 23 (1340945.2) Charles Wade refers to: 'Admiral 68. Walking Stick of Bone - with ivory top carved as a 'Turk's Head' Knot. (Narwhal Tusk has left-handed spiral & 'has a large cavity). Includes sketch with dimensions.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust with Snowshill Manor in 1951 by Charles Paget Wade.
