Summary
Trumpet (Side-blown, African). African side blown trumpet made from a polished elephant tusk with a diamond shaped mouthpiece to the side. Diamond pattern repeated twice around horn, with dot pattern. Two notches broken into wide end. With modern leather cord. 'Probably from Sierra Leone where such instruments are known as oliphants. Ivory horns were insignia of royalty' (M. Jessup).
