Summary
Violoncello bow, English (?), early 19th century. Possibly a viol bow adapted for use with a cello. 'The ebony frog, which may well be unoriginal, has been adapted to allow for an unorthodox grip. The frog itself is fully mounted, but while it has a silver heel plate and a three part silver and ebony adjuster, the ferrule is of nickel silver. The weight of the bow is 84g, which is very slightly over the average for a full sized cello bow. The length is 738mm or 756mm with adjuster. The mother of pearl slide is of Abalone heart. The head of the bow is of an archaic form known as a pikes head. The wood of the round stick appears to be Pernambuco'. From Padraig ó Dubhlaoidh's report 2006.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust with Snowshill Manor in 1951 by Charles Paget Wade.
