Summary
Clavichord (Fake), ascr.to A. Ventura, 1533, Italian, late 19th century. Purporting to be the work of Aloysius Ventura, inscribed around the rim: 'OPUS HOC FECIT ALOYSIUS VENTURA VENETIA QUI NOVATUR IN LOCO NUNCUPATO MDXXXIII' (sic?) Irregular 38-note (c.3-octave) the key levers being angled to form a diamond-shaped division between e1 and f1. Exterior covered with leather and buck skin. On lid embossed vase decoration and painted female figure. Probably the work of Leopoldo Franciolini (1844-1920). Previously associated with inventory number SNO.MC.111.
