Summary
Hurdy-Gurdy, (Vielle a Roue) by Colson, c.1840. Stamped 'Colson a Mirecourt'. Guitar-shaped body with edging of ebony and ivory. Head carved to represent a bearded ancient. Six strings: two chanterelles, four drones and twenty four keys. Top of key box and wheel bridge ebony/darker wood. In notebook no.4, page 4 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Music Room 21. Vielle a Roue or Hurdy-gurdy by Colson a Mirecourt.' 'Bought from S. Hagger, 12 St Stephens Lane, Ipswich, 6th October 1938, Old wheel violin £5' (M. Jessup).
