Summary
Bassoon, Astor, London, c.1810. Marked 'Astor, London'. Stained maple with brass mounts. Eight brass keys. Copper and brass bell, painted red inside. Brass mouth tube. Separates into four sections. In notebook no.4, page 9 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Music Room 89. 4 Bassoons of 18th Cent. one has a copper horn. The bell, not original, was to amplify the sound and it was probably a military instrument. Three bassoons recorded one bought from Oliver Smith and Co. 34 High Street Oxford, 10th May 1934 £3 one 'from Fenton and Sons, 11 New Oxford Street London, 19th February 1917' and a third bassoon from Hildersham Church Cambridgeshire 17s.6d.
