Summary
Coal/charcoal fired smoothing iron with chimney at the front and a wooden handle, brass hand guard, complete with trivit stand (SNO.M.128b). Chimney painted black with gold petal pattern.Deep steel container for coal/charcoal, with grille at back, covered by swinging cover, stamped Lyng. Top, with handle and handguard, is hinged to this container, with a bar with wooden knob to engage catch.On handguard, ‘2’, ‘6’ in a circle, large circle containing 'Registered trademark W.C. Lyng', outide circle, ‘La Esperanze’. As the charcoal cooled the user would swing the iron to reheat the fuel. In notebook no.5, page 7 (1340945.5) Charles Wade refers to: 'Top Royal no. 47 Charcoal Iron' Includes sketch.
