Summary
One of two octagonal lacquered bamboo boxes, tea chests. The lid painted with a house scene showing two sages, one seated with a young man and two women talking to young person on a balcony. The centre of the lid is raised and the border painted with a band of bronze leaves on a black background. Inside of lid is red lacquer. Eight panels on box, a house and river, a bird on branch, Chinese characters, a locust, two ladies on a balcony, a goldfish, Chinese characters and a horse. Background of elaborate flowers and foliage, red lacquered rim. In notebook no.3, page 69 (1340945.3) Charles Wade refers to: 'Green Room 206. Pair of Chinese Tea chests of black & gold lacquer bent wood construction.' Includes sketch with dimensions.
