Summary
Vertical spinning wheel with double band driving system. Originating from Switzerland circa 1800 - 1850. Possibly made of sycamore with ivory or bone pips on maidens. Medium stain. A Swiss vertical spinning wheel comprising a tenon jointed base framework and two vertical split turned posts carrying the wheel. The wheel is of offset plank construction which is relatively uncommon method of assembly. Treadle is set to one side of the base frame and has a fixed pivot to the crank (i.e. no keyhole). A water or grease pot is provided on the front maiden. There is no distaff which would be a freestanding seperate item. Flyer axle is mounted through neat brass bearings. A flip catch lifts to remove the flyer. Decorative ivory finials on the maidens, tension screw and cross bar at either end. Estimated to be early nineteenth century. Minor woodworm in the base frame and on top cross bar. Ivory pip on top front wheel post missing. Pulley whorl is a replacement. Early NT ref SNO/DC/14. Information and digital photograph supplied by David and Valerie Bryant 2006. In notebook no.4, page 90 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Top Gallant 23 Upper Austria well balanced & of good finish. Ivory finials. These wheels often have double flyers & bobbins.' Includes sketch with dimensions.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust with Snowshill Manor in 1951 by Charles Paget Wade.
