Summary
Vertical cottage spinning wheel with double band drive system. Thought to be from the United Kingdom, possibly Scotland circa 1800 - 1900. Oak rim and body (possibly). Dark stained. A traditional cottage wheel. The wheel rim is a two piece construction with a narrow add on strip. The maker probably would have made the rim from one piece of wood had a sufficiently wide piece been available. The rectangular table is chamfered on the two back corners, with decorative edge beading to the front and scalloped edge decor on either side/back edges. The vase form treadle is unusual in having a centre cut out where it joins the front stretcher. Could this be a stylistic feature the maker was using? Flyer has wood holes along each arm, and a wood peg which can be moved along hole to hole. Origin possibly Scotland. Missing the distaff. The front maiden, pulley whorl and footman are replacements. Condition is fair. The wheel rim has a split possibly due to the construction. Early NT ref SNO.DC.8. Information and digital image supplied by David and Valerie Bryant 2006.
