Summary
Horizontal spinning wheel with double band driving system from Normandy in France from 1780 - 1900. Fruitwood or sycamore wood (hard to distinguish). Medium dark stain. A typical French wheel on a triangular base frame. The wheel is set into short wheel posts mounted on a rectangular frame carried on four vertical spindles. These wheels were always small in size, and this one has a lead strip screwed into the perimeter groove to give it more momentum. The wheel crank has no pip as it is typical of French wheels but someone has put a screw thread on the end. The flyer and pulley whorl are very large which seems typical of these wheels. The three spindle distaff is set to the right of the wheel. No maker's name. Condition is fair, the wheel rim has broken at some point and staples have been used for repair. Early NT ref SNO/DC6. Information and digital photograph supplied by David and Valerie Bryant 2006. In notebook no.4, page 90 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Top Gallant No. 26 Spinning Wheel of extremely light ?, ornamental finials. Triangular base frame. (bt. at Whitstable)'. Includes sketch with dimensions.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust with Snowshill Manor in 1951 by Charles Paget Wade.
