Summary
Dutch (?) sloping spinning wheel with a double band drive system and stamped with a maker's name 'FLT'. European, circa nineteenth century. Oak rim and table with dark stain. A saxony sloping bed wheel with spool turnery on the legs and other spindle work. The wheel rim is made in two pieces, the smaller strip being effectively an add on part. The table has a beaded edge profile down the long sides and roundels fitted on the two short sides are now missing. Lidded recess in table for flax pot. Ivory pip on distaff table post. The stamp 'FLT' is impressed twice on the table end, on the left and the right hand side. Currently is is not known who this maker might be. Thought to be nineteenth century. Missing and broken parts, treadle, footman, flyer, flax pot, ivory pips missing on maiden ends. Upper distaff bell spindle is broken. Condition is fair. Table split where back right leg fits. Some worm in table and minor worm holes in other parts. Patricia Baines quotes origin as possibly Dutch, but the bell shaped distaff is a feature often associated with Germany an dother nearby countries. Early NT ref SNO/DC/2.
