Summary
Japanese picnic set in gold lacquer with, in one side, a nest of four square boxes below an open section containing a tray; in the other side, one drawer below a squared, figure eight shaped, fitted flask and an open shelf containing nine rectangular plates. Raised on four bracket feet with carrying handle on top. Decorated with country scenes and plants and fruits. Side panels of case have repeating patterns. In notebook no.6, page 20 (1340945.6) Charles Wade refers to: 'The Blue Room 83. BENTO BAKO Picnic Set of golden brown ‘Aventurine’ lacquer of very fine Quality, beautifully drawn floral decoration – flask, 9 small trays, nest of trays, etc.'. Includes sketch with dimensions. 'Bought from Wyndham Payne, Cheltenham on 18th July 1946, two picnic sets' (M. Jessup)
