Summary
Lacquered wood, 19th century, Japanese picnic set of nest of, in one side, four boxes, top one with a lid, plates missing; in other side, below an open shelf one drawer and one large rectangular flask. Boxes and flask decorated with various gold patterns. Sides of carrier open with arched top and pierced bottom panels. Pierced top with carrying handle. In notebook no.6, page 9 (1340945.6) Charles Wade refers to: 'The Blue Room 21. Another [Bento Bako] of black and gold lacquer. Design of trees. ???? with flask.' Includes sketch with dimensions. 'Bought from Wyndham Payne, Cheltenham on July 5th 1944' (M. Jessup).
