Summary
Japanese picnic set with parts missing (Bento Bako). Wooden carrying frame with no front or back, and shaped open sides, brass handle on top. To one side, two flasks in a fitted base, with open-topped boxes beneath and above. The other side consists of a stack of four similar boxes, the top one with a lid. Above them is a shelf with a shallow tray, and a box in a separate compartment below. All decorated with gold abstract foliage. In notebook no.6, page 9 (1340945.6) Charles Wade refers to: 'The Blue Room 20. BENTO BAKO. Japanese picnic set of black lacquer with ‘pine’ needle in gold – has two round flasks.' Includes sketch with dimensions. Bought from Wyndham Payne, Cheltenham. 2 lacquer picnic boxes on 18th July 1946..
