Summary
The stand for a black lacquer and chinoiserie decorated cabinet on later stand, Chinese, the cabinet circa 1730, the stand circa 1900. The cabinet with foliate decorated shaped double-arched moulded crest above a pair of doors with decorative lock-plate and scenes of gardens and pagodas, enclosing a fitted interior of pigeon holes, letter slots and twenty eight variously sized drawers arranged around a central shrine niche with gilt columns, all profusely decorated with pagoda landscapes and latticework, with two slits below which would have held candle-slides. The stand with pierced scrolling friezes and hipped legs terminating in claw and ball feet. In notebook no.3, page 21 (1340945.3) Charles Wade refers to '238. Chinese Cabinet of Black & gold lacquer, with large curved pediment. Two arched doors "Shrine” interior with gold columns, 28 drawers of various sizes & pigeon holes, decorated with landscapes, temples, Pagodas Pavillions etc. The doors flanked by gold pilasters, fluted with foliated caps. At the base are slots for candle slides, being the upper part of a Bureau. It now stands on a modern table in so called Chinese style. ebonized. c.1730. Cabinet 3’3” x 3’2½” without pediment'. Mr Wade has inserted an additional page into the notebook which includes an annotated plan of the interior of this cabinet. 1. COURT OF THE MYSTERIOUS FOREST. 2. WAY OF THE GOLDEN PILLARS. 3. Elephant evolved from INDRA’s Elephant carrier of the sacred Jewel of the Law. 10. CHU TS’ANG SHĚN. The Divine Guardian of the Treasury. 11. CHU PING CH’ĚN. The General who commands the Army. 12. JU I CHU. The wonder working Jewels, capable of fulfilling every wish.)
