Summary
A Buddhist Butsudan black lacquer freestanding shrine cabinet, Japanese, mid 19th century. Panelled sides and back. The exterior doors with central pierced escutcheon and engraved sliding catch, folding back to reveal a pair of lattice inner doors enclosing a fitted gilded interior of doors, niches and sliding compartments below a double canopy roof / sky, the upper section with multiple giltwood pillars flanking a stepped plinth where a figure of Kwannon the Dhyani Bodhisattva stands on a lotus flower, the base containing a pair of drawers with engraved handles and on short square legs.
Provenance
Bought in Cambridge for £1 10s. Given to the National Trust with Snowshill Manor in 1951 by Charles Paget Wade.
