Summary
Drop fronted wooden box containing fifty rectangular plaster casts of the Elgin Marbles by John Henning 1771-1851. The box is painted with 'ELGIN MARBLES'. The front of the box is hinged and drops down to reveal seven drawers of plaster casts. There is a paper label inside with a handwritten explanation of the Elgin Marbles' history. CPW Item 110 (Gallery Room) - 'set of plastercasts in box of trays by Jennings 1810-1816.' This may be an old misreading as John Henning produced the casts. Some of the lower trays of casts are broken. The casts were formerly associated with inventory number SNO.C.4777. In Account book SNO.MISC.972 Mr Wade makes a reference to 'Elgin Marbles' that he purchased from 'Green' for 18s. (page 4)
Provenance
