Summary
Shield; Jingasa (Japanese shield). Circular conical shaped wooden shield coated with black lacquer bearing a painted Bizen family crest in the form of a butterfly in reds and yellows. Gilded brass open boss in the centre held by metal tabs in the side. Interior of red lacquer. Lacquer is flaking. In notebook no.3, page 114 (1340945.3) Charles Wade refers to: 'Green Room 540. Japanese Hat of Black lacquer, bearing a Butterfly in Reds & Yellows. Underside of Hat is vermillion.'
