Summary
Naval sword - Sword with scabbard (1328726.2/SNO.A.26.2). Pipe back naval sword, standard issue by 'DUDLEY, GRAND PARADE,PORTSMOUTH' inscribed on both sides of the blade. Blade corroded, engraved with anchor, rope and crown and 'Dieu et mon droit'. Brass hilt, part hinged with lion's head. Sharkskin grip, cord and tassel. Crown and anchor in relief on front of hand guard. In notebook no.2, page 21 (1340945.2) Charles Wade refers to: 'Admiral 62. Naval Sword belonged to ADMIRAL JOHN. ROSS. WARD. RN. he entered the Navy in 1826. Retd: Captain 1870. Ret’d. Ad’: 1875 was for many years General Inspector of Lifeboats & retired aged 70 in 1883. Invented the sectional cork life belt. ob, June 24th, 18-?Sword by Dudley, Grand Parade, Portsmouth.' Includes sketch with dimensions.
