Summary
Picture frame for oil painting on panel, The Virgin and Child with St Jerome and St Francis, Italian (Umbrian) School. early 16th century. Several of these [Old Master paintings in Lady Betty's Dressing Room] have fine frames of Italian inspiration if not of Italian origin, generally carved in poplar. Some were presumably framed by the Roman dealers James Byres and Thomas Jenkins from whom the 3rd Duke of Dorset made many acquisitions while on the Grand Tour in 1770 and on his return to England. On the right Garofalo's Judith with the Head of Holofernes (no. 126), sent by Jenkins to the Duke in 1775, has a very finely carved frame of Maratta section with an intricately gadrooned top edge, while The Madonna and Child with Saints (no. 127), acquired through Jenkins in 1770, has a simpler frame of the same type. (Jacob Simon, A Guide to Picture Frames at Knole, NPG website). English, 1890-1900. Compo, gilt, regilt? manufacture (P. Levi, 1988).
