Summary
Picture frame for oil painting on panel, An Unknown Man, Italian (Venetian) School, circa 1540. Several of these [Old Master paintings in Lady Betty's Dressing Room] have fine frames of Italian inspiration if not of Italian origin, generally carved in poplar. Some were presumably framed by the Roman dealers James Byres and Thomas Jenkins from whom the 3rd Duke of Dorset made many acquisitions while on the Grand Tour in 1770 and on his return to England. Unknown man called Raphael (no. 99) is framed in a crisply carved neoclassical pattern with leaf-and-berry top edge. (Jacob Simon, A Guide to Picture Frames at Knole, NPG website). English, 1780-90. Manufacture: carved, gilt, regilt. Late Carlo version (P. Levi, 1988).
