Summary
Print, Sketch for the head of Dante from 'Dante's Dream' after Dante Gabriel Rosetti (London 1828 - Birchington 1882) the original of which is in the Walker Art Gallery collection. Inscribed on backing 'Given to me by Ursula Hake whose Father was secretary to Dante Gabriel Rossetti and whose Godmother was Christina Rossetti and her grandfather B.J.M. Donne the artist'. The inscription on the reverse is interesting as it shows a link with the famous Rossetti family and also indicates its provenence as May Tudor (1890-1979) was close to the London artistic world and friendly with Benjamin Donne (1831-1928). It so happens that Donne left London to live in Exmouth (this before May moved there) and died at his home 9 Louisa Terrace, in that town. The print was brought to A La Ronde and purchased from her daughter in 1991.
