Summary
Print; Engraving - Cottage near Exmouth (view of A La Ronde). Engraving 'Sketched from Nature and on Stone by L.W. Martens'. Printed by Engelman and Co. Early c19. In ill fitting stained wooden frame. A la Ronde was constructed c1798 and this is the earliest view of it which appears to feauture different events. The uniformed person in front of the gates is using a measuring device to carry out the Ordnance Survey of 1800-1810. The horse rider is thought to be Lewis Way who rode along this road in 1812 after hearing the story of the Parminters and was inspired to campaign on behalf of Jewry. The depiction of Exmouth includes the tower of Holy Trinity Church built 1820-24. L W Martens (artist) is known to have completed a Devon tour in 1829 when a dated lithograph of nearby Powderham was published.
